CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball travels to Homewood this Tuesday to rematch the Bulldogs of Samford University. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
Following a five-game losing skid, the Wolves (15-14, 6-6 ASUN) bounced back this weekend by winning two-straight in order to take an away ASUN series over UNF. Samford (17-15, 4-2 SOCON), on the other hand, is coming off of their first conference series win over Wofford, a 3-0 weekend sweep in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Â
This matchup marks the 19th time the Wolves have faced off against the Bulldogs. UWG leads the series 14-4, but the Bulldogs took the last head-to-head 11-7 at Cole Field (March 4).Â
Expected to make his first-ever start for UWG is freshman
Maverick Torres. Through 2.1 innings across three appearances, the righty has recorded three strikeouts and has yet to give up a hit. In Torres' most recent showing (March 29), the Long Beach, California native struck out one Stetson Hatter in his lone frame.Â
Currently, the Wolves post a 5.47 ERA and a .281 batting average.
Coming off of a stellar weekend at the plate is senior center fielder
Cooper Prince. Over the UNF series, Prince batted at a .400 average, tallying a team-high six hits with four runs scored. Prince's .358 season batting average ranks him sixth in the conference. The outfielder also tied for second with four triples, places fifth with 33 runs and ranks ninth in the league with 39 hits.
It is unclear who will start on the mound for the Bulldogs, but senior righty Brooks Rice seems to be the safe bet as he has been the main midweek starter throughout the season. In 16.1 frames across eight games, Rice posts a 9.37 ERA with 11 punchouts. In his appearance against UWG earlier the season, Rice struck out five Wolves and gave up one run through 3.2 innings.
As a team, the Bulldogs post 5.63 ERA and a .295 batting average.
Leading the Samford charge at the plate is sophomore catcher Cade Carr with a .357 average. In 112 at-bats, Carr has recorded 40 hits, 40 RBIs, 22 runs, nine doubles and five homers. Against UWG earlier this season, Carr tallied one hit and one walk in four at-bats.
In that 11-7 loss to the Bulldogs, freshman left fielder Jake Souders led Samford with four hits in five at-bats. Two other Bulldogs recorded three hits and another two recorded a pair of hits. UWG was out-hit 16-10 in the home loss.
First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field on Tuesday is set for 7 p.m. Samford is unable to stream this midweek matchup, but a stat link is tagged above.Â
